Gary Gygax Memorial

Next to the Riviera Fountain, along the shore of Lake Geneva, is a memorial for Gary Gygax, known for being the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, the role-playing game that’s inspired and entertained people of all ages since it was published in 1976. 

Born in Chicago Illinois, Lake Geneva was where Gygax spent the majority of his life. It was here that he was introduced to a beloved hobby of his, “Wargaming,” which planted the seed in his head that would grow to become Dungeons and Dragons.

It’s no understatement to say that without Gygax we might not have tabletop role-playing games at all. He’s considered by many to be the father of fantasy gaming, with D&D having been the catalyst for popularizing tabletop role-playing games.

If you ever feel like paying tribute to the original Dungeon Master, stop by Gygax’s memorial. Legend has it that Dungeons and Dragons players can get their dice blessed by rolling them on the memorial stone.
