Spomenik Prvoj Štafeti (Monument to the First Relay)

The city center of Kragujevac is home to a statue dedicated to the first Relay Of Youth.

The statue is designed in such a manner that it appears the woman is pregnant, but this is actually made to mimic a raised knee running. She is also simulating the passing of the baton during the Relay Of Youth. The statue not only represents the event, but also Nada Stevanović, the first baton carrier of the relay.

The sculpture was designed by artist Matija Vuković in 1977. The first Relay Of Youth began in 1945 and became a national holiday in 1957. The final relay was held in 1987. 

The event was more symbolic than competitive, and was held across the former Republic of Yugoslavia. The Relay of Youth was held every year for the birthday of Josip Broz Tito. Batons that featured birthday pledges are now on exhibit at the Museum Of Yugoslavia. 

Tito’s birthday was celebrated on May 25th and was made into a national holiday known as Youth Day, although his real birthday actually May 7th.
